DSCF1077 Come Explore With Us!

We're dedicated to teaching students of all ages about the incredible natural world we live in! Whether you want to bring your class on a field trip to the Manatee Center or you're interested in having a Manatee Center educator come to you, we're excited to share our knowledge with students and groups.

School Field Trip Visits to the Manatee Center

The Manatee Center offers year-round programming for visiting K-12 school groups. Each program topic follows Florida state standards. A copy of each lesson plan and list of applicable standards is available for teachers upon request. Each visit to the Manatee Center will last approximately 90 minutes unless otherwise requested.

Please see below for information about pricing and how to schedule.

Because of room constraints, group size is normally limited to 50 students per program. Multi-day visits to the Manatee Center are welcome if accommodating larger groups. If you have need of more than 50 students visiting the Manatee Center in one program, please contact our Education Coordinator for special arrangements.

Each school program at the Manatee Center includes an overview of manatees and a live touch tank demonstration, as well as one additional program topic and activity. Please choose an additional topic/activity below:

Program Title

Description

Grade Levels

Indian River Lagoon Scavenger Hunt

Using observation skills, students will investigate an outdoor area to find living and man-made items that create an environment. This outdoor program is weather-dependent.

Pre-K-1

Sea Urchin Lab

Students will use observation and deduction skills to form hypotheses about sea urchin anatomy and behavior. Students will conduct simple experiments to test hypotheses. This program uses live animals.

K-2

Sea Turtle Lifecycle Game

Students will explore the life cycle of sea turtles, discover the limiting environmental factors that may lead to mortality, and understand how human action leads to population decline in an outdoor game. This topic is weather-dependent.

2-5

Build-A-Shark Workshop

An overview of shark anatomy, habitat and adaptations is coupled with an activity where students use what they have learned to “build” their own species of shark. Students will then present their build choices based on scientific principles.

3-5

Plankton Lab

(Available soon!)

Using a plankton tow net and microscopes, students will collect and identify live planktonic animals from the Indian River Lagoon while learning about why these microscopic creatures are a crucial part of the world’s food chain.

4-8

Outreach (Off-Site) Programs

Off-site programs are ones that our educators bring to your classroom, gathering place or public park. Each program generally lasts between 60-90 minutes. Multiple groups can be accommodated. Prices vary by program and program length (please see below for pricing structure). These programs are adaptable by age range or grade level.

Touch Tank to You

This program brings a mobile version of our live touch tank to you! Participants will learn about the many invertebrate species in our Lagoon and oceans, and why they’re so important.

Adaptable; please contact Education Coordinator for group arrangements.

Seining Adventure

(Not offered November through February)

Get more than your feet wet as we explore the Indian River Lagoon and its inhabitants! Using nets in teams, we will walk into a real seagrass bed to collect live sea animals. After some observation and identification, we will gently release them.

For the safety of participants, generally less than 50.

Indian River Lagoon Overview Presentation

Get an in-depth overview of the most biodiverse estuary in North America that runs for over 150 miles along the east coast of Florida. This will delve into the Lagoon’s ecology, history and the impacts humans have had.

Adaptable; please contact Education Coordinator for group arrangements.

Marvelous Mangroves

Dive into the world of mangroves! With your field journal, magnifying glass, and binoculars (provided), explore scuttling crabs, baby fish, soaring birds and many more animals that all use mangroves. Prepare to get wet and bring your water shoes (water shoes required to get in the water).

For the safety of participants, generally less than 50.
